Schedules

Confession- I have a tendency to over schedule myself. I keep my calendar and to-do lists handy at all times; I have a very rigid, color-coded-ink method of tracking every last detail, task, and appointment. My heart will skip a beat if I forget or can’t find my calendar. 😬

That seems innocent enough, right? 🤔

But hold up, wait a second- is there actually something deeper going on here? Is my calendar my way of clinging on to control?! I NEED to control every last minute of my day so that I can get everything done that just HAS to get done. As I’m sitting here, doing some self-reflection, I’m realizing that maybe, just maybe- this is not very Christian-like behavior. Not the calendar itself- I’m not saying it’s bad to be organized or have a system of tracking your to do lists, but that underlying issue, the heart of the matter- do I leave enough time for those God-moments? Do I allow enough wiggle room to be able to calmly allow for those “God willing” adjustments to my agenda?

So what should we, as Christians, be doing? I’m not suggesting we should just walk around all willy-nilly without a basic outline of our week or our day, but what if Moses wouldn’t have gone up Mount Sinai because he had other plans that day? What if instead of obeying, he would’ve said “sorry God my list for today is already full. How about tomorrow?” OR what if he said “how long will I be up there? How much time are you going to need? Ewww, yeah- 40 days isn’t going to work for me; the kids have soccer, I need to get the laundry done, the car packed, the groceries put away, so I can pencil you in for an hour, MAX!”

Are we allowing God time in our schedule? Are we willing to look at our plan and say “God willing”? Are we willing to use pencil instead of color coded ink on our agendas?
